Social historian specialized in studies of nationalism and national identity, historiography and historical theory. Full professor at the Ruhr University of Bochum in Germany, where he directs the Institute of Social Movements and chairs the committee of the Library of the Ruhr Foundation. He taught modern German history and comparative European history at the University of Manchester, UK, until 2011.
